Serves
4
  • 4 apples, firm and acidulous
  • Around 100g dark brown sugar
  • Around 75g butter (+for the dish)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon or mixed spice (optional)
  • Slices of white bread

Methods/steps

Preheat the oven to 180°C.
Butter a baking dish.
Slightly butter bread. Arrange the slices in the dish.
Wash and core apples. Put them on the bread.
If you're using cinnamon or mixed spice, mix it together with the sugar.
Pack this mixture and butter into the apple cores, alternately. The tops of the apples should be covered with butter.
Bake for around 30 minutes or until apples are tender and bread caramelized without being burnt.

Additional Tips

For an even sweeter dessert, you can replace bread by gingerbread.
And for a totally decadent delight, serve hot with ice cream.
