Reputed for their ‘delicate, playful and sophisticated’ sound, this band has one of the finest rhythm sections in the northeast

For fans of Bonnie Prince Billy, Wilco and King Creosote

Headlining the evening are the Holy Folks, a three-man combo playing their own brand of get-up-and-dance acoustic pop and antifolk

The Holy Folks are for people who just wanna have a real good time!

Between the live sounds, DJ Harvey Johnman plays an eclectic bunch of 45s from punk to funk, soul to folk, with a hint of reggae.

I'm really glad I went along to One Night in the Country tonight - as usual I dithered about whether I would, but when such an event is organised I think it's worth supporting. And as usual the wee effort was worth it.

The three bands were very good and made a good mix.

The Kitchen Cynics (pictured and sounding below) served up an excellent mix of traditional music (I enjoyed hearing song about Boddham Fair, the Ferry disaster in Fittie and other local songs), but they can also go off into some interesting left-field territory. And they kindly gave permission for inclusion of a song from their CD I bought.

No Pasaran were moody and good to hear... I liked the banjo... reminded me of Radiohead.

The Holy Folks were a fantastic jump of punky-folky energy, with some excellent songs and great musical talent... the type of band I'd travel much further to see. Check out their The Holy Folks MySpace for some of their songs.

I liked the video projections of local scenes from a moving car. The DJ between bands played very cool toons. The real ale was alright (bit too malty for my taste). And the people I spoke to were all friendly - I just wish there was 80 rather than about 40. A lot of them were youngsters which was good to see.

clapping clapping to the organisers. I do hope they do more of the same in the future, and that more folk realise what a good time they can have if they go along.

It is a good song... which they did play on the night.

It's about the Victorian artist Richard Dadd (click his name for an interesting illustrated biography), who enjoyed painting fairies and the supernatural. Unfortunately he became convinced his dad was the devil and slit his throat. They locked him up in Bethlehem mental asylum (better known as Bedlam) for his last twenty years.

So does that relate to your mood, mystic wink

Here's another track from the Kitchen Cynics, Ex-lover's Lane, featuring some more esoteric sounds made by the cello.

That's another beautiful song... which absolutely relates to my mood, thankyou kiss . Cello is one of my favourite instruments.

I had never heard of Richard Dadd, what a fascinating character and a tragic life... but maybe that's not exactly my mood wink. I feel melancholic and eccentric, not insane... well who knows.
Thankyou for adding this biography cheers
