Digging a hole - Kemnay!
This was taken outeside Kemnay yesterday.
It is just oppisit the quarry and they have been digging there for ages.
They have created quite a pond/lake/loch and it is still getting bigger!
They were taking away the gravel and sand for a while but seem to be just piling it up now!
A buldozer was working shoving what the machine with the long arm had bug up aside, but on cue it stopped just as I was going to say "Cheese!"

As you will see they have made quite a hole and a lot of water.
It is growing into a fair sized loch (Loch Kemnay).
I don't know how deep it is but going by the length of arm the machine has it must be very deep!
Showing Kemnay Quarry in the background.

I can't say I've any experience of digging holes in lakes, but it just doesn't seem right... no doubt I just don't understand what's going on
Are they making Loch Kemnay bigger? Is this to provide a splendid outlook for some development planned for the foreshore? Will it be a great place for a swim or waterskiing? It is looking quite a size.
Your photos do make me wonder BoB _________________ ENJOY GrampianLife.co.uk! |

Loch Kemnay is a new thing.
It was fields a couple of years ago when they started digging I think to extract sand & gravel (so I am told).
The better half tell me they have applied for an extension to extract more sand and gravel.
This loch is supposed to be filled in again I am told!
Don't know who they are going to do that with all of SEPA's rules these days. They will have to let the slit settle for a year or so before they can pump out the water (Hopefully clean by that time) and fill it up.
What are they going to fill it with?
I would rather they left it as a loch but they will have to do whatever the planing agreement says.

It looks like a fine place for a loch, so I don't think they should fill it in again
Loch Kemnay... great potential for a tourist attraction! _________________ ENJOY GrampianLife.co.uk! |

Aye, the only thing is Tesco will want to build there
I wish I could fine out from Scottish Agrigates what they plan for it in the future.

I do have some more pics but I think those are enough
The birds were enjoying a swim there while they were working with the machines. Didn't seem bothered.

Thanks for all the pictures BikeOnbye although it is a bit disappointing to find out it is just for gravel extraction. When I first saw the pictures I thought it might have been a new fishery. However gravel extraction pits once exhausted are renowned wildlife sites so perhaps the planning has already taken this on board.
Edit :- Perhaps you can keep us up to date BikeOnBye as the hole gets bigger and keep a record of pictures.

Sandy rents some of the wee parks from the Quarry and was told some time ago that they were having to dig deep to get mair sand.He was under the impression that it would not be filled in once they were finished with it ,but tidied up,screened and made bonnie to attract wildlife etc,how accurate this is I'm not sure .I know they are to try for more extraction sites as they told him that they would be making test holes in some of the parks he uses.
There was an application submitted to the council last year for I think it was Mill Farm for more sand extraction etc, will have to see if I can find the planning officer involved ,see what she can tell me.Not been down that way for ages BoB,thanks for the pics, looking good. |
