Frida

(USA/Mexico, 2002, 15, 108 mins, Dir Julie Taymor)

A very personal project for star Salma Hayek who also produced this biopic of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Rendolent of the period (20s and 30s) artistically but also politically the film features encounters with Trotsky and Rockerfeller. Director Taymor adopts something of Kallo’s visual style in scenes like the crash which cripples the artist. Alfred Molina has another excellent supporting role as her artist husband Diego Riveria who wants to depict Lenin in his mural for the Rockerfeller building! An enjoyable story, a visual feast and the life of a remarkable woman.
