A Cock and Bull Story

(UK, 2005, 15, 94mins, Dir Michael Winterbottom, starring Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon)

The eighteenth century novel 'The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy’ is the basis for the new film in the eclectic works of the British director. But here the story is about the making of a Tristram Shandy film – in which Coogan is either sending up his own persona or perhaps having it done for him. Brydon is excellent as his foil – periodically breaking into Coogan impressions much to the star’s annoyance. The pitfalls of low budget film making are exposed as well as Coogan’s ego.
